Low Maintenance Trading: Are There 'Fire & Forget' Trades to Earn 20-30% Per Year? (Part 1) |

We received an email prior to our first Open Discussion - Q&A Session for 2025. Stephen K. asked: "I was wondering if you could touch on some low maintenance (longer term) strategies - ones that possibly involve LEAPS? Anualized returns in the 10-30% range (just throwing that number out there, don't know if that's being over zealous)."
We tackled Stephen's question live with our thoughts on Low Maintenance, LEAPs strategies that might suit his needs:
Married Puts
Simulated CD's - Deep ITM Covered Calls 1 Year Out in Time
1 Year Out LEAPs Standard Collars - popular among Broker's and Advisor's
We had the recording set and ready to go...then we realized there was an issue with our comparison!
Using the patented Historical Tools on PowerOptions we showed how the default Married Put results, with no income methods, would have met or exceeded his results.
However, the Simulated CD and LEAPs Collars did not come close to meeting expectations or matching the Buy and Hold of SPY or QQQ.
So we spent the time this weekend to make a fair comparison:
Would the Simulated CDs approach - High Return, High Downside Protection and High Probability Covered Calls meet the returns on the same stocks of the Married Put?
Would balancing the two with a 1-Year Out LEAPs Collar meet the same goals on the same stock?
Instead of posting the live webinar results (and if you want to see that, let us know in the comments) we make a fair comparison...
8 stocks. 3 Bullish Strategies. 3 'Fire & Forget' Low Maintenance Trades. Same Time Period of a Bullish Market.
Which Strategy Comes Out Ahead...? |

5. A look at the DAL upcoming Long Straddle for Earnings & the importance of using the Profit and Loss Chart to see the 'What-If' scenarios of an IV crush...and how to determine what the IV crush might be with historical data on PowerOptions (21:40 to 36:50)
6. Patrick: "Is there a gudieling to follow to determine when the Long Put in the Married Put becomes useful as an alternative profit from the trade..." (36:55 to 56:42)
- I ask for clarification on the question, assuming he means selling to close the stock in expectation of the downturn and leaving the put open in a bearish trade (37:00 to 38:00)
- That was what he meant, so we break down this approach of:
--Selling to close the stock and leaving the Put Open in a declining market
--Compared against using Income Method #12 in The Blueprint, or waiting for the bottom to use Income Method #9
--Basing it on our preferred Chart Patterns for seeing a change in the stock price

1. Review of the End of Year Bonus Offer for The Blueprint (0:00 to 2:40)
2. Question Via Email from Scott: (2:45 to 29:35)
- "The upcoming USSC tariff ruling could be a big market mover. . I was thinking about hedging with VIX calls. From your past discussions, I know you like to look 45-60 days out. Is this a case where closer in calls may be a good idea as the decision is very likely coming out soon? I know this means taking a hit on time decay but I'm not expecting to hold them long.
A second part of the question. Would it make sense to buy some calls closer to your standard criteria as a 'real' hedge and then maybe some further OTM near term calls as more of a lottery play in case the market tanks hard (obviously, with funds that I use for such a purpose)?"
- We introduce Scott's Question (2:45 to 5:15)
- Review of our VIX approach and other content on Market Hedges (5:20 to 13:10)

Well, Harry put us to task on this one, so let's see what we can do. Here is the breakdown of today's Open Forum - Q&A:
1. Reminder - no webinar next week on Nov. 28th. Let's enjoy the shortened trading week! (0:00 to 0:55)
2. Review of the Market this week, Market Sentiment Tool and Fusion Trades (1:00 to 9:15)
3. Harry: What is your average return in your personal account? (9:30 to 26:10)
- My Portfolio allocation in different strategies and targets, how that differs from Ernie's allocation and setting realistic goals based on conversations (trials, tribulations, successes and failures we have seen with investors since 1997)
4. Harry: What other services are out there that provide what you provide or better? (26:20 to 32:40)
- Our thoughts on what is out there, avoiding Gambler's Ruin with over hyped promises and the risk of the Lie of Leverage
5. Harry: GO back 15 years...you invested in AAPL, MSFT, DPZ and others...how would you compare to that? Warren Buffet and Berkshire are considered the best investors out there. How do you compare to them? (32:50 to 39:31)
- I don't have those numbers, but Harry provides them. We show what we have done, our expectations (realistic) and goals. Every investor has to find their match to their risk tolerance and goals. If you feel you can do better on other approaches...that is on you.
6. Did you or Ernie ever mimic Joe Hooper or any other great investors? More on the Berkshire Comparison (39:45 to 44:40)
- I read the question and then internally laughed out loud. No. We never mimicked Joe Hooper...or Snider Investing (really had The Wheel before 'The Wheel' was a term). We taught Hooper's Covered Calls and Calendar Spreads as we were the only site at the time that offered tools to find his trades. Later, we improved those approaches for investors that lost money on his techniques. Follow up on this Berkshire comparison idea
7. Paul: in the perfect world how can you maxmize married put approach? what timing would improve results? (44:45 to 49:30)
- A look at our approach using the Market Sentiment Tool, MACD, SMA 20 and mention of how Ernie uses the Bollinger Bands
8. Harry: Do you feel there are stocks that are too big to fail? Like MSFT (Microsoft). Do you feel we must have MSFT for computers to function? (49:30 to 53:55)
- MSFT is not going out of business nor being bought out, IMHO. However, if they hit the hardest of hardest times...someone would step in and cover the difference. Value of Capitalism. Computers |

Let's talk about the current situation...You bought into the Newsy Stock, the Hot Stock just a little too late. The stock rose as you expected and you rode the wave. Now, the stock has pulled back. You still have an unrealized gain but with the election coming up, another earnings cycle, other economic reports and who knows what the FED will do next...Should you take your gains now? Hey, that would give a profit and remove the risk of the winner becoming a loser...Should you hold and hope? More profits possible, or that winner could become a loser...How about locking in most of those unrealized gains? Bulletproofing your position and guaranteeing you can not lose, still getting income and leaving the upside open? That's what the PowerOptions Stock Repair Tool can do for you! Take a look, see how to lock in your gains and not have your winning stock trades turn into a loss. |

Max (via email): Each day, sell an at-the-money (ATM) 0DTE Put on SPY. If assigned, hold the shares and sell a 0DTE ATM Covered Call the next day—continuing this process daily. Based on the time value of ATM 0DTE options, given current implied volatility levels, this strategy can generate an annualized return of at around 30% at least. Sell 0DTE at-the-money Puts; Write a Covered Calls if a Put expires ITM the day before and you get assigned SPY; Otherwise, Sell new 0DTE ATM Puts; Repeat every day, at market opening; Aim to collect a 30% annualized premium from these operations. Don’t worry about the underlying (SPY). As long as it doesn’t fall more than 30% from today’s level, we’ll remain profitable. If it does fall, get assignment selling Puts, and keep SPY in portfolio waiting for its price to recover…(0:00 to 2:30) - Our initial thoughts on this approach (2:30 to 7:50) - A look at SPY over the last few months to illustrate our thoughts (8:15 to 16:40) - How the change in IV (or VIX) could effect this trading plan (16:45 to 18:45) - Review of our initial thoughts (18:50 to 21:15) - Look at SPY over the past 10-14 days vs 5-6 months and what we would expect to happen (21:20 to 23:30) - What are the ATM premiums of SPY puts and calls, and how changes in IV would effect the trading plan (23:35 to 27:15) Dan: Quick question: what would be a safe way to add a bit of revenue every month for my current Married Put on KGC? The PUT expires in Jan 2026.There could be pullbacks in gold, but miners like KGC have a very strong balance sheet anywhere above 2,000 USD/oz gold. - A look at a Married Put on KGC (Kinross Gold) (27:25 to 31:15) - A look at Roll Outs from the PowerOptions Portfolio - Position Analysis view (31:30 to 34:30) - Discussion on Income Method #6 in The Blueprint - Get Income & Leave the Upside Open (34:30 to 37:25) - Comparison of IM #6 vs. just selling a call, and managing IM #6 (37:30 to 43:00) - Discussion on other Income Methods from The Blueprint, using the Put as a 2nd working asset (43:05 to 45:45) Follow up for Max: Looking to continue the conversation, Back Test the concept and yes...I will eat my words if I am wrong ;) (45:50 to 51:35) End & Wrap Up (51:45 to End) |
