Apollo Group and Goldman Sachs lead the list of negative stories with less promising than expected quarterly reports. In acquisitions/mergers news, Amgen said it plans to acquire Abgenix. Also this morning, Citigroup has upgraded SanDisk. MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- In overseas trading, only five of the 15 markets that we track are showing gains, and the overall average return is -0.213 percent. The FTSE 100 in London and the CAC 40 in Paris are both down 0.3 percent, and the German DAX is level so far on the day. The Nikkei was the biggest loser once again, down 1.4 percent after hitting a five-year high yesterday. The January crude futures contract fell 0.85 percent on Wednesday. The American Automobile Association reported that the national average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.192 on Wednesday, up from $1.829 a year ago. Meanwhile, natural gas futures for January delivery showed a sharp loss of 4.55 percent, but January heating oil edged forward by 0.46 percent. DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES--------------------------------------- ---------------- With the US Federal Reserve raising interest rates for the 13th straight time since June 2004 on Tuesday, the monetary policy board also more importantly indicated that the end of the increases is near. While the bankers did say that they?d continue to raise the rates at a ?measured? pace, they removed the ?accommodative? assessment from the statement and instead said: ?Further measured policy firming is likely to be needed to keep the risks to the attainment of both sustainable economic growth and price stability roughly in balance.? This signals that the tightening may soon be over. But shortly after the Fed delivered the news, the US trade deficit once again offset the good news by breaking new ground in October, rising 4.4% to a new record of US$68.89 billion from September?s revised US$66 billion. This came thanks to rising demand for foreign oil and natural gas, which offset an increase in exports. Exports were up 1.7%. Imports were up by 2.7%. Elsewhere, it appears much more merger activity is imminent, with three new deals on the way. General Dynamics just agreed to acquire Anteon, the provider of information technology, system integration, and engineering services, for US$55 a share in cash. That?s a 36% premium over Tuesday?s closing price. Under the deal, General Dynamics will assume Anteon?s US$100 million debt. It?s expected to close by the close of Q2 and is expected to ?immediately? add to General Dynamic?s earnings. The New York Times reported that FPL Group Inc is in talks to acquire Constellation Energy for about US$11 billion. According to reports, ?A deal would create an electricity-industry behemoth, with state-regulated utility operations in Florida and Maryland, and a power generation and supply business that operates in deregulated markets around the country. The combined company would own about 25,000 megawatts of power generation fueled by natural gas, coal, nuclear reactors and wind.? Finally, there?s ConocoPhillips, which just agreed to acquire Burlington Resources for US$35.6 billion. The deal would offer Burlington shareholders US$46.50 in cash and 0.7214 shares of ConocoPhillips stock. PUT/CALL ALERT ---------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- Equity option activity on the CBOE saw 555,550 put contracts traded on Wednesday compared to 971,112 call contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio climbed to 0.572, while the 21-day moving average slipped very slightly to 0.586.
