Bristol-Myers Squibb, MCI, and Brocade Communications have the highest srtIndex scores to top the list of companies with positive news while ConAgra Foods and Dillards lead the list of companies with negative news reports. UTI Worldwide has popped up with a high positive news sraIndex score. MARKET OVERVIEW------------------------------------------------------- -------------------- In overseas trading, traders are struggling to hold onto a positive note, as nine of the 15 foreign indices are in positive territory. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at 0.119 percent. In Asia, the Nikkei and the Hang Seng were both walloped for 100-point losses, as traders sought an opportunity to take some profits off the table. Meanwhile, across the pond in Europe, only the London FTSE 100 was trading in negative territory early this morning. The U.S. Dollar Index dropped 47 cents during the regular session of trading yesterday. The greenback touched a 32-month high against the yen yesterday following comments made on the sidelines of weekend meetings of the world's top finance leaders revealed little Japanese concern over a weaker currency. Late during the session on Monday, the dollar was changing hands at 120.78 yen from 120.16 yen on Friday, a 0.5-percent gain. The dollar reached as high as 121.39 yen, an area last reached in March 2003. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar hit 14- year highs versus its U.S. counterpart, with the greenback worth as little as C$1.1551 at one point Monday. These gains came on expectations that the Bank of Canada will raise its interest-rate target to 3.25 percent today from 3.0 percent. A rate hike would help give a yield boost to the currency on top of its commodities-related appreciation. The policy move would narrow the gap between Canadian rates and the four-percent U.S. target. In early trading, the dollar is trading higher versus all of our benchmark currencies except the Brazilian real, the Mexican peso, and the Canadian dollar. The January crude futures contract added 89 cents on Monday, tagging a session high of $60.80 per barrel, as frigid temperatures swept through the Northeast and Midwest. On the other hand, January natural gas, which rose above $14 per million British Thermal Units (BTU) for the first time since October 27, finished the day with a loss of 27.1 cents at $13.66 BTU FUTURESWATCH --------------------------------------------------------- -------- Yesterday's consolidation session had equity future setting back a bit which attracted some late buying that seems to carrying over to this morning's session. Oil prices may be done with its recent short covering rally as it shows some early weakness that is also helping to force the equities to move higher. The S&P's should remain strong as long as that market can maintain the 126300 level and the 170000 level in the NASDAQ futures. There is report on factory orders at 9:00 CST that could help the current rally. It certainly looks as if the markets are on mission to retest the recent highs as it continues to attract buyers whenever the markets offer the opportunity. PUT/CALL ALERT ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ Equity option activity on the CBOE saw 417,256 put contracts traded compared to 685,572 call contracts on Monday. The resultant single- session put/call ratio rebounded to 0.608, while the 21-day moving average followed suit to arrive at 0.584.
