NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, CarMax, Inc., Apple Inc., and Smith & Wesson
Holding Corp. lead the list of companies with positive news, while
E-Trade Financial, Research In Motion Ltd., Inc., and Teekay
Corporation lead the list of companies with negative news.
Carnival, Sunpower, and Fidelity National Financial were upgraded
this morning, while RF Micro Devices, LDK Solar, and Baidu.com were
downgraded.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading looks much improved this morning, as nine of the
10 foreign indices that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a gain of
0.95%. Trading in Asia closed broadly higher Friday, as financials
advanced in China after the country opened the door for new share
listings. Across the pond in Europe, miners and banks led the way
higher on hopes that the global economy has moved past the worst of
its downturn.
Crude futures caught a lift from Wednesday's upbeat economic data,
with traders cheering the Conference Board's suggestion that the
recession is on its last legs. A pipeline attack by militants in
Nigeria also prompted buying pressure on the hot commodity, as did
the World Bank's increased growth forecast for China.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,517,789 call contracts traded on Thursday, compared to
1,154,208 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call
ratio arrived at 0.76, while the 21-day moving average rose to
0.67.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $90.80 and resistance around $96.10. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQQ),
support is near $35.50 and resistance is around $36.35.
