NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS----------------------------------------- So far this morning, Burger King Holdings, Medtronic, Inc., and Big Lots lead the list of companies with positive news, while Staples and Southern Copper lead the list of companies with negative news. Rio Tinto, Google, and Costco were upgraded this morning, while Companhia Vale do Rio, Central European Distribution Corp., and BlackRock were downgraded. MARKET OVERVIEW--------------------------------------------------- Overseas trading is in trouble this morning, as only one of the 10 foreign indexes that we track is in positive territory. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of 0.76%. In Asia, stocks ended mostly lower, dragged lower by a drop in Chinese equities amid worries that banks may have to issue new shares to meet stricter capital requirements. Turning to Europe, stock slipped for the first time in four sessions on Tuesday, with banks and miners some of the worst performers as investors took a breather after pushing shares to a fresh annual high in the previous session. Gold futures backpedaled on Monday, hammered by a double dose of technical and fundamental concerns. Gold has come under pressure recently amid remarkably tame inflationary data, and fresh fuel was added to the fire today after the yellow metal tumbled through its 20-day moving average. PUT/CALL RATIO --------------------------------------------------- Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) saw 2,007,644 call contracts traded on Monday, compared to 1,083 859 contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived at 0.54, while the 21-day moving average slipped to 0.58. SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS -------------------------------------- The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood of $98.10 and resistance around $104.00. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQQ), support is near $38.45 and resistance is around $40.60.
