NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS----------------------------------------- So far this morning, Wal-Mart Stores, Motorola, and YRC Worldwide lead the list of companies with positive news, while SINA Corporation Biovail Corporation, and Alcatel-Lucent lead the list of companies with negative news. BHP Billiton, Research In Motion, and Petrobras Brasileiro were upgraded this morning, while Nokia, American Axle, and MetLife were downgraded. MARKET OVERVIEW--------------------------------------------------- Overseas trading is weak this morning, as only four of the 10 foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of 0.36%. In Asia, stocks in China climbed, bouncing back from Monday?s heavy losses, as economic data showing an expansion in manufacturing activity helped boost sentiment. Turning to Europe, regional indexes couldn't hold onto early gains this morning, with banks and metal stocks leading the way lower on the first day of September. Crude futures gravitated lower on Monday, as a sell-off in China ? the world's second-largest oil consumer ? weighed on hopes for a rebound in energy demand. Also pressuring black gold, Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member United Arab Emirates on Saturday said Abu Dhabi will increase crude supplies to Asia starting in October. The cartel is slated to review supply levels at its meeting Sept. 9 in Vienna. According to industry surveys, OPEC production has escalated in recent months, despite an agreement to curb output in late 2008. Against this backdrop, October-dated crude surrendered 3.8% to end at $69.96 per barrel, marking the first time the front-month contract has finished beneath the $70 level in two weeks. PUT/CALL RATIO --------------------------------------------------- Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) saw 1,280,282 call contracts traded on Monday, compared to 807,0632 contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived at 0.63, while the 21-day moving average held at 0.58. SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS -------------------------------------- The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood of $101.60 and resistance around $104.35. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQQ), support is near $39.65 and resistance is around $41.10.
