NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS----------------------------------------- So far this morning, Autoliv Inc. (ALV), Medtronic (MDT) and and Novell (NOVL) lead the list of companies with positive news, while Tiffany & Co. (TIF), Google (GOOG), and SunTrust Banks (STI) lead the list of companies with negative news. Boeing (BA), Post Properties (PPS), and Waddell & Reed (WDR) were upgraded this morning, while IAC/InterActive (IACI), Valero Energy (VLO), and Akamai Technologies (AKAM) received downgrades. MARKET OVERVIEW--------------------------------------------------- Overseas trading looks weak this morning, as only two of the 10 foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of 0.80%. In Asia, stock markets retreated on renewed concerns over Greece's debt problems ahead of a euro zone summit, with caution pervading on news of an India interest rate hike. India's stock market opened nearly 1% lower after the central bank's surprise 25- basis point rate hike on Friday, which came after local markets had closed. Meanwhile, European shares extended losses on Monday morning, led lower by banks and commodity stocks as investors fretted over further monetary tightening in emerging markets. The prospect of additional interest-rate hikes around the globe is having a negative impact on crude futures this morning. Compounding concerns that China may move to tighten its monetary policy, India's Reserve Bank lifted rates by a quarter point. In reaction, crude futures have fallen more than 1% to $80.08 per barrel. Also affected by the concerns for higher interest rates, gold futures have dropped $3.30 to $1,104.30 an ounce. Finally, the U.S. Dollar Index is trending higher in overseas trading, rising 0.12% to 80.82. PUT/CALL RATIO --------------------------------------------------- Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) saw 1,834,092 call contracts traded on Friday, compared to 1,120,410 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived at 0.61, while the 21-day moving average held at 0.59. SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS -------------------------------------- The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood of $115.15 and resistance around $117.50. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQQ), support is near $47.10 and resistance is around $47.95. TODAY'S ECONOMIC CALENDAR ---------------------------------------- No major events expected today.
