NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
Stocks pointed higher this morning include Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM),
Goodyear Tire (GT) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN). Stocks looking to open
lower are Pall Corp. (PLL), Micron Technology (MU) and Next Era
Energy (NEE). Stocks receiving upgrades this morning include Astec
Industries (ASTE), Juniper Networks (JNPR) and Cisco Systems
(CSCO). The downgrade list this morning includes Travelzoo (TZOO),
Somazon Pharma (SOMX) and American Electric Power (AEP).
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Stocks in Asia ended mixed today, as traders weighed a still-murky
macroeconomic picture. A solid session on Wall Street helped to
encourage a few of the bolder bulls, but most buyers remained on
the sidelines ahead of interest-rate decisions from the U.K. and
Europe, as well as highly anticipated speeches from U.S. Fed Chair
Ben Bernanke and President Obama. Among the advancing issues,
Hyundai shares revved higher in Seoul after an upbeat sales
forecast, while Japan's Inpex rallied amid strength in oil futures.
By the close, South Korea's Kospi climbed 0.7% and Japan's Nikkei
added 0.3%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng and China's Shanghai
Composite each declined 0.7%. Monetary policy is in focus over in
Europe, where both the Bank of England and the ECB today opted to
stand pat on rates. Traders will now be poring over the
accompanying commentary by ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet, to
determine whether policymakers may consider additional
accommodative measures in the face of notable economic headwinds.
Against this uncertain backdrop, regional benchmarks are trading
cautiously higher at midday. At last check, the French CAC 40 has
added 0.5%, and both Germany's DAX and London's FTSE 100 are 0.2%
higher.
The greenback has reclaimed some ground this morning, with the U.S.
dollar index last seen fractionally higher. Elsewhere, after
finishing at a five-week peak on Wednesday, crude oil futures have
pared some of their gains, with the front-month contract down 11
cents, or 0.1% to flirt with $89.23 per barrel. Finally, in the
wake of a widespread round of profit-taking yesterday, gold futures
are on the upswing, advancing $24.70, or 1.4%, to linger near
$1,842.30 an ounce.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 830,322 call contracts traded on Wednesday, compared to 512,709
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.62, while the 21-day moving average was 0.75.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $112.40 and resistance above $123.50. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ),
support is around $51.65 and resistance is near $55.75.
