MARKET OVERVIEW--------------------------------------------------- Asian markets ended mostly higher today, despite a volatile session. Traders are looking forward to today's announcement from the U.S. Federal Reserve, with policymakers expected to unveil new stimulus measures to bolster the flagging economy. However, lingering concerns about the fiscal health of Europe continued to drag on banking shares, while Hong Kong's benchmark settled in the red amid heavy selling in property stocks. By the close, China's Shanghai Composite gained 2.7%, South Korea's Kospi added 0.9%, Japan's Nikkei rose 0.2%, and the Hong Kong Hang Seng shed 1%. On the other hand, European indexes are wallowing in red ink at midday. A lack of closure on the Greek situation is pressuring sentiment, after a series of conference calls between Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos and European bailout officials failed to produce any measurable progress. With discussions on Greek aid slated to continue this weekend, traders seem resigned to finish out the week under a cloud of uncertainty. At midday, the German DAX is down 1.6%, France's CAC 40 has shed 1.3%, and London's FTSE 100 is off 0.9%. The greenback is muscling higher this morning, with the U.S. dollar index up 0.3% at last look. Elsewhere, crude oil futures have given back a healthy portion of Tuesday's gains, with the front-month contract down 77 cents, or 0.9%, at $86.15 per barrel. Meanwhile, gold futures are trading fractionally lower, with the malleable metal last seen in the $1,808.90-an-ounce vicinity. PUT/CALL RATIO --------------------------------------------------- Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) saw 956,066 call contracts traded on Tuesday, compared to 604,554 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived at 0.63, while the 21-day moving average was 0.70. SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS -------------------------------------- The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood of $118.70 and resistance above $122.00. For the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ), support is around $53.90 and resistance is near $57.35.
