So far today, ArvinMeritor, Acorda Therapeutics, and Estee Lauder
Companies lead the list of companies with the most news stories
while Covidien Ltd. and James River Coal Company are showing a
spike in news. Enterprise Products Partners LP, Nasdaq Stock
Market, and NYSE Euronext have the highest srtIndex scores to top
the list of companies with positive news while Credit Suisse and
UBS AG lead the list of companies with negative news reports. El
Paso Corp. has popped up with a high positive news sraIndex score.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is in poor shape this morning, as only 2 of the 11
foreign indices that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of
0.38%. Asian markets ended broadly lower Tuesday, with financial
stocks leading the way lower in Australia following a weak earnings
report from St. George Bank and a decline on Wall Street.
Meanwhile, Shanghai-listed stocks edged lower on profit-taking
after 3 sessions of strong gains. Japanese stock markets were
closed for a holiday.
Across the pond in Europe, stocks are also trading lower.
Financials are one again leading the way, after UBS, Lloyds TSB,
and Swiss Re announced losses related to credit-market woes. The
decline is being tempered by gains in commodity-related stocks,
however. Rising gold prices and record oil prices are lifting the
sector, with Rio Tinto (RTP) up about 3.2% and Vedanta Resources
adding 3.4%.
Gold surged yesterday, adding $16.10 to close at $874.10 an ounce
after rising as high as $874.70 an ounce. The malleable metal
garnered its momentum from the weakening dollar and the rising
price of crude.
Crude futures finished at another record high yesterday, thanks to
supply concerns and a weakening dollar. June-dated black gold
rounded out the session at $119.97 per barrel, $3.65 – or 3.14% -
higher on the day. For the first time ever, the benchmark crude
contract topped the $120 level in intraday trading. On Sunday,
Nigerian rebel group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the
Niger Delta (MEND), claimed responsibility for an attack on a Shell
oil flow station in the south of the country. The group has
claimed responsibility for a rash of attacks on Niger Delta oil
facilities in the past month.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the CBOE saw 1,455,611 call contracts
traded on Monday, compared to 968,987 put contracts. The resultant
single-session put/call ratio jumped to 0.67, while the 21-day
moving average remained at 0.74.
