MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is mixed this morning, with 6 of the 11 foreign
indices that we track in positive territory. The cumulative average
return on the collective stands at a gain of 0.44%. In Asian
trading, shares of Sony (SNE) lifted Tokyo markets after the
electronics titan yesterday posted stronger-than-expected earnings.
Other Japanese exports, including Toyota Motor (TM), rallied on the
news as well. Elsewhere, a day after the shares of BHP Billiton
(BHP) surged higher, the stock dropped 1.9% in Australian trading
on fears that the mining giant could up the ante on its bid for
rival Rio Tinto (RTP).
Across the pond in Europe, most indices were lower or hovering near
breakeven after a plethora of banks stepped into the earnings
confessional. More specifically, British lender Barclays (BCS) lost
more than 3.5% after reporting declining first-quarter profit,
while Credit Agricole fell nearly 1% in France after revealing a
66% decline in quarterly earnings. Elsewhere, French media mogul
Vivendi jumped more than 5% higher after disclosing stronger-than-
expected first-quarter numbers. Outside of the earnings spotlight,
German gross domestic product grew 1.5% from the quarter prior –
the strongest reading in 12 years.
The Energy Information Administration reported yesterday that crude
inventories rose to 325.8 million barrels, up 200,000 barrels, last
week. Supplies have now increased a total of 12.1 million barrels
over the course of 4 weeks. The report pressured crude-oil
futures, with the July contract dropping $1.48, or 1.18%, to
$124.11 per barrel.
