MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is mixed this morning, with 8 of the 11 foreign
indices that we track in positive territory. The cumulative average
return on the collective stands at a gain of 0.37%. In Asian
trading, Shanghai-listed shares were hit with losses early in the
trading session, after data revealed that China's inflation
accelerated in the month of April. However, most stocks ended up
recovering, as investors did a bit of bargain buying. Elsewhere,
banking stocks in Australia got a boost from reports that Westpac
Banking Corp. is in merger talks with St. George Bank. South Korean
and Hong Kong markets were closed for holiday.
Across the pond in Europe, stocks were moving higher, as investors
cheered the latest quarterly numbers from HSBC Holdings (HBC), the
continent's largest bank. Meanwhile, commodity-related stocks were
lifted on rising oil prices, with BP (BP) and Total (TOT) inching
more than 1.3% higher, respectively. Telecommunications firm
Telecom Italia (TI) jumped more than 2.5% higher in Italian
trading, lifted in part by an upgrade to "buy" from "hold" at
Deutsche Bank.
Crude futures continued to benefit from weakness in the U.S.
dollar, along with political tensions toward a key exporter. A
report suggested that the U.S. may soon be pressured to impose
sanctions on Venezuela – the country's president, Hugo Chavez, is
reported to be aiding the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
Against this backdrop, June-dated crude surged $2.27 to close at
$125.96 per barrel – a gain of $9.64 for last week.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------

traded on Friday, compared to 816,790 put contracts. The resultant
single-session put/call ratio rose to 0.70, while the 21-day moving
average held at 0.70.
