NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
Stocks pointed higher this morning include Microsoft (MSFT),
Honeywell International (HON) and Goodyear Tire (GT). Pointed lower
today are SanDisk (SNDK), Ingersoll Rand (IR) and Micron Technology
(MU). Analyst upgrades this morning include Wintrust Financial
(WTFC), Ixia (XXIA) and Brown & Brown (BRO). Downgrades today
include Badger Meter (BMI), Iveria Bank (IBKC) and Riverbed
Technology (RVBD).
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
It was a mixed session in Asia, with traders in Tokyo and Seoul
taking their cues from Wall Street's Thursday decline. Continued
weakness in Apple weighed heavily on tech stocks, as did SanDisk's
warning that memory-chip pricing pressure could extend through the
end of the year. However, expectations for policy support from
Beijing helped Chinese equities finish in the black. By the close,
South Korea's Kospi fell 1.3%, Japan's Nikkei gave up 0.3%, Hong
Kong's Hang Seng edged up 0.07%, and China's Shanghai Composite
gained 1.2%. Stocks in Europe have elbowed their way modestly
higher at midday, with upbeat sentiment data out of Germany once
again luring buyers. After a positive reading earlier this week
from the ZEW investor sentiment index, the Ifo Institute reported
that its business confidence index arrived at a stronger-than-
expected 109.9 in April. Meanwhile, banking giants BNP Paribas and
Societe Generale outperformed in Paris after upgrades from Bank of
America-Merrill Lynch. At last look, London's FTSE 100 is up 0.5%,
the French CAC 40 has advanced 0.6%, and Germany's DAX has tacked
on 1%.
The U.S. dollar index has retreated this morning, with the
greenback last seen 0.3% lower at $79.31. Crude oil is pointed
north, with the front-month contract 0.6% higher at $103.33 per
barrel. Gold futures are up 0.2% to trade at $1,645.20 an ounce.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,468,901 call contracts traded on Thursday, compared to
971,043 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio
arrived at 0.66, while the 21-day moving average was 0.64.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $137.00 with resistance near $139.35. The Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) has
shown support around $65.25 and resistance around $67.15.
