MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Asian markets ended mostly lower today, as traders seemed anxious
ahead of a planned Spanish debt auction. However, Hong Kong-listed
equities closed in the black, with insurance stocks and financials
leading the gainers amid speculation that the People's Bank of
China is readying a number of liquidity-boosting measures. By the
close, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.8%, South Korea's Kospi lost 0.2%,
China's Shanghai Composite gave up 0.09%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng
tacked on 1%. European equities are mixed at midday, as investors'
relief over respectable demand for an auction of Spain's two- and
10-year notes has been offset by rising bond yields. Traditionally
defensive stocks, such as pharmaceuticals, have managed to claw
their way higher, with Roche leading the pack after the company
said it will drop its bid for Illumina. At last check, London's
FTSE 100 is up 0.5%, while the German DAX is down 0.5%, and the
French CAC 40 is 0.6% lower.
The U.S. dollar index is up 0.1% at $79.61. Crude oil is on the
rebound following yesterday's better-than expected inventories
report, with oil for May delivery 0.3% higher at $103.39 per
barrel. Gold futures are trading 0.1% north of breakeven, with the
malleable metal last seen at $1,641.10 per barrel.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,246,864 call contracts traded on Wednesday, compared to
737,083 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio
arrived at 0.59, while the 21-day moving average was 0.64.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $137.00 with resistance near $139.35. The Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) has
shown support around $65.25 and resistance around $67.20.
