NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far today, Caterpillar, BP PLC, and NYMEX Holdings lead the list
of companies with the most news stories while Manpower Inc. and
Xerox Corporation are showing a spike in news. Schlumberger Ltd.,
Honeywell International Inc., and BJ Services Company have the
highest srtIndex scores to top the list of companies with positive
news while Citigroup and General Electric lead the list of
companies with negative news reports. Baker Hughes Inc. has popped
up with a high positive news sraIndex score.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is mixed this morning, with 6 of the 11 foreign
indices that we track in positive territory. The cumulative average
return on the collective stands at a gain of 0.16%. In Asia,
Shanghai-listed shares led the trek lower, with airlines China
Eastern (CEA) and China Southern Airlines (ZNH) falling on worries
of rising fuel prices. Shares of CEA also took a blow from reports
that the airline was fined 1.5 million yuan ($210,000) by the
aviation industry following one of its pilots allegedly abandoning
several domestic flights to fly back to departing airports.
Across the pond in Europe, things look slightly more optimistic, as
Norwegian fertilizer maker Yara reported first-quarter earnings
that nearly tripled analysts expectations. Meanwhile, shares of
Royal Bank of Scotland inched higher in London trading, after
reports that the British bank is planning on raising billions of
pounds in a rights issue.
Crude-oil futures lost ground on Thursday, pulling back from a
record of $115 per barrel due to strength in the U.S. dollar.
Crude for May delivery fell 7 cents to settle at $114.86 per
barrel. Recent strength in crude prices has been driven by a
weaker dollar as well as concerns about supply and U.S. inventory
levels.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the CBOE saw 1,361,127 call contracts
traded on Thursday, compared to 1,027,841 put contracts. The
resultant single-session put/call ratio came in at 0.76, while the
21-day moving average held at 0.82.
TODAY'S ECONOMIC CALENDAR ----------------------------------------
The economic calendar is void of data today, and next week offers
little to get excited about. Monday and Tuesday are blank, and
Wednesday's only offering are existing home sales for March and the
weekly U.S. petroleum supplies report.
