NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, National Semiconductor (NSM), Aeropostale
(ARO), and Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (POT) lead the list of
companies with positive news, while Discover Financial Services
(DFS), Pall Corporation (PLL), and AnnTaylor (ANN) lead the list of
commpanies with negative news. Southern Copper (SCCO) and Lifetime
Brands (LCUT) were upgraded this morning, while Abbott Labs (ABT),
Pacific Sunwear (PSUN), and Facet Biotech (FACT) received
downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is holding firm heading into the weekend, as seven
of the 10 foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory.
The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a gain of
0.33%. In Asia, regional indexes closed mixed, but Japanese stocks
hit a seven-week high after Wall Street rallied on the possibility
that the new banking regulations being studied by the U.S. Congress
could be watered down. European shares rose, reversing losses from
the previous session, with banks leading the way higher.
The U.S. dollar is coming under fire this morning, as the euro
managed to break through chart resistance following a report that
indicated stronger-than-expected industrial output for the euro
zone. The U.S. Dollar Index has fallen 0.69% to 79.77 as a result.
Commodities have received a boost from the weaker greenback.
Specifically, crude futures are up 58 cents at $83.01 per barrel,
while gold futures have added $8.90 to trade at $1,117.10 an ounce.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,560,541 call contracts traded on Thursday, compared to
845,802 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio
arrived at 0.54, while the 21-day moving average slipped to 0.62.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $114.05 and resistance around $115.50. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $45.40 and resistance is around $47.35.
