NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Toll Brothers (TOL), J.M. Smucker (SJM), and
The TJX Companies (TJX) lead the list of companies with positive
news, while STEC, Inc. (STEC), Century Aluminum (CENX), and Verigy
(VRGY) lead the list of companies with negative news. FPL Group
(FPL), Autodesk (ADSK), FMC Technologies (FTI) were upgraded this
morning, while Banco Santander (STD) and Noble Energy (NE) received
downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is weak this morning, as only three of the 10
foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of
0.30%. In Asia, stocks retreated as surprise drops in U.S.
consumer confidence and German business sentiment fueled fears
about the strength of the global economic recovery. China
implemented fresh measures to clamp down on excessive bank lending,
which it fears could create destabilizing asset bubbles. Turning to
Europe, stocks fell for a third consecutive session as investors
awaited congressional testimony from U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman
Ben Bernanke.
With focus turned toward Bernanke's testimony, the U.S. dollar is
trading mixed heading into the open. Specifically, the U.S. Dollar
Index was down 0.18% at 80.71 at last check, reversing some of
yesterday's strength. However, commodities have been unable to
capitalize on the weaker greenback. For instance, crude futures
are down 0.44% at $78.51 per barrel. What's more, gold futures
have plunged $10.10 to trade at $1,093.10 an ounce in London.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,182,131 call contracts traded on Tuesday, compared to 898,105
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.76, while the 21-day moving average held at 0.68.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $106.10 and resistance around $111.60. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $42.75 and resistance is around $45.05.
