NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, United Parcel Service (UPS), Emerson Electric
(EMR), and Plum Creek Timber (PCL) lead the list of companies with
positive news, while Dow Chemical (DOW), Anadarko Petroleum (APC),
and American Superconductor (AMSC) lead the list of companies with
negative news. Alcoa (AA), Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), and Southern
Copper (PCU) were upgraded this morning, while Duke Realty (DRE),
ValueClick (VCLK), and Brandywine Realty (BDN) received downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading looks much improved this morning, as seven of the
10 foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a gain of
0.27%. Trading closed mixed in Asia, with Japan and Australia
chalking up healthy gains after better-than-expected U.S.
manufacturing data sparked a rally on Wall Street. Turning to
Europe, shares edged higher, extending a winning run to three days,
with miners up after Australia left interest rates unchanged.
Crude futures climbed in concert with stocks yesterday, as traders
digested the day's solid ISM manufacturing data. Supply concerns
also played a role in black gold's gains, with Royal Dutch Shell
forced to shut down some production in Nigeria following the
sabotage of its Trans-Ramos Pipeline. Energy traders were also
pleased to see the U.S. dollar backpedaling versus the euro, making
dollar-denominated crude futures a more attractive buy. Crude oil
for March delivery gained $1.54, or 2.1%, to wrap up the day at
$74.43 per barrel.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,191,749 call contracts traded on Monday, compared to 718,806
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.60, while the 21-day moving average slipped to 0.60.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $107.90 and resistance around $110.25. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $42.85 and resistance is around $44.90.
