NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Deere & Co. (DE), Whole Foods (WFMI), and
Devon Energy (DVN) lead the list of companies with positive news,
while Campbell Soup (CPB), Walgreen (WAG), and Valmont Industries
(VMI) lead the list of companies with negative news. Qwest
Communications (Q), Mattel (MAT), and Home Depot (HD) were upgraded
this morning, while Pan American Silver (PAAS), Terra Industries
(TRA), and Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI) received downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is in good shape this morning, as nine of the 10
foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a gain of
1.14%. In Asia, regional indexes climbed, as resource shares led
the way due to rising commodities and a weaker U.S. dollar.
Turning to Europe, the various indexes advanced to a two-week high
as forecast-beating results from BNP Paribas helped banks and
stronger commodity prices supported mining and energy shares.
Attention has shifted toward crude futures in the commodities pits
this morning, as the March contract has risen 0.43% to $77.75 per
barrel due to a warming view on the global economy. Meanwhile,
gold futures have pulled back this morning, slipping 80 cents to
$1,119 an ounce due to a slight rebound in the U.S. dollar.
Speaking of which, the U.S. Dollar Index has added 0.20% to hover
just below the 80 mark in pre-market activity.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,372,924 call contracts traded on Tuesday, compared to 856,564
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.62, while the 21-day moving average rose to 0.68.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $106.10 and resistance around $110.60. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $42.75 and resistance is around $44.90.
