NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Exxon Mobil (XOM), Gannett Co. (GCI), and
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) lead the list of companies with positive
news, while Humana (HUM), Sohu.com (SOHU), and Amazon.com (AMZN)
lead the list of companies with negative news. Time Warner (TWX),
Noble Corp. (NE), and Viacom (VIA.B) were upgraded this morning,
while Arch Coal (ACI), Macy's (M), and Cott (COT) received
downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading looks weak this morning, as only four of the 10
foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of
0.08%. The various markets in Asia closed mostly lower on Monday.
Concern over tightening monetary India and China weighed on
investor sentiment. In Europe, trading is mixed, with UBS down 2.3%
after the Swiss justice minister said the economy would suffer if
the Swiss bank collapsed as a result of its unresolved U.S. tax
dispute.
Crude oil kept pace with weakness in the equities market on Friday,
grinding lower despite a substantial uptick in domestic gross
domestic product (GDP). With consumer spending still under
pressure, oil futures pulled back to a one-month low amid
expectations for lackluster energy demand. Meanwhile, a strong day
for the U.S. dollar also diminished black gold's appeal. By the
close, crude oil for March delivery dropped 75 cents, or 1.02%, to
settle at $72.89 per barrel.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,429,957 call contracts traded on Friday, compared to
1,048,683 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call
ratio arrived at 0.73, while the 21-day moving average held at
0.61.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $103.10 and resistance around $110.45. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $40.65 and resistance is around $44.90.
