NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Apple (AAPL), EMC Corporation (EMC), and
Verizon (VZ) lead the list of companies with positive news, while
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), LM Ericsson (ERIC), and Wimm-Bill-Dann
Foods (WBD) lead the list of companies with negative news. Morgan
Stanley (MS), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Alcoa (AA) were upgraded
this morning, while Johnson Controls (JCI), CIGNA (CI), and Tractor
Supply (TSCO) received downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is extending Monday's losses, as only one of the
10 foreign indexes that we track is in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of
1.05%. In Asia, the major markets closed sharply lower Tuesday,
with Chinese shares dropping further in Hong Kong and Shanghai amid
worries about possible limits on bank lending. In Europe, shares
fell for a fifth straight session, as worries over Japan's fiscal
health and lackluster growth from the U.K. economy offset better-
than-expected earnings from Siemens and Novartis.
In parity with the equities market, crude futures also snapped
their recent losing streak on Monday, thanks to the weaker dollar
and an oil spill in Texas. More specifically, the greenback lost
ground against most of its foreign rivals, pressured into the red
following today's record slide in existing home sales for December.
Meanwhile, the 11,000 barrels of black gold leaked into Texas'
Sabine-Niche Waterway marked the state's largest spill since 1994,
and prevented seaborne supplies from reaching four U.S. refineries.
Against this backdrop, crude oil for March delivery added 72 cents,
or almost 1%, to settle at $75.26 per barrel.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,315,762 call contracts traded on Monday, compared to 842,772
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.64, while the 21-day moving average held at 0.59.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $109.10 and resistance around $115.15. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $44.00 and resistance is around $46.65.
