NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, U.S. Bancorp (USB), Bank of America (BAC), and
State Street (STT) lead the list of companies with positive news,
while International Business Machines (IBM), CSX Corporation (CSX),
and Coach (COH) lead the list of companies with negative news. CBS
(CBS), Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), and Tesco (TESO) were upgraded
this morning, while Big Lots (BIG), Corn Products (CPO), and EnCana
(ECA) received downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is in poor shape this morning, as only one of the
10 foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. The
cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of
0.82%. In Asia, most markets closed lower, as concerns China may
step up its tightening measures to cool a rapidly growing economy
hit banking and resource shares hard. In Europe, shares slipped,
with negative broker comment weighing on the auto sector and miners
declining amid speculation of more moves by China to curb economic
growth.
Gold futures finished in the black yesterday, thanks to a larger-
than-anticipated increase in U.K. consumer prices. The British
government today reported that year-over-year inflation jumped by
2.9% in December, surpassing economists' expectations for a milder
rise of 2.5%, and bolstering gold's appeal as an inflationary
hedge. Though the metal's gains were limited by the greenback's
rise versus the euro, gold for February delivery added $9.50, or
0.8%, to finish at $1,140 an ounce.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,735,907 call contracts traded on Monday, compared to 983,404
put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call ratio arrived
at 0.57, while the 21-day moving average held at 0.58.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $113.20 and resistance around $115.15. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $45.65 and resistance is around $46.65.
