NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Linear Technology Corporation (LLTC), Baidu,
Inc. (BIDU), and Kraft Foods (KFT) lead the list of companies with
positive news, while Google (GOOG) and Dell (DELL) lead the list of
companies with negative news. Rio Tinto PLC (RTP), AstraZeneca
(AZN) and Joy Global (JOYG) were upgraded this morning, while
Capital One (COF), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and Kennametal (KMT)
received downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is in poor shape this morning, as only three of
the 10 foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory.
The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a loss of
0.83%. In Asia, stocks closed in the red, after Chinese central
bank moved to rein in excessive credit creation. In Europe, stocks
edged higher. However, investors were fretting about bank-sector
earnings on Wednesday, with Societe Generale shares down 4.4% after
it said it now expects to report "a slight profit" for the fourth
quarter of 2009.
Crude futures turned lower for the second consecutive session on
Tuesday, after China's decision to boost interest rates increased
concerns about the country's petroleum demand and weighed on black
gold. Furthermore, the commodity was pressured lower amid forecasts
for warmer temperatures across the U.S., which is expected to
decrease demand for heating oil. By the close, February-dated crude
oil gave up $1.73, or 2%, to finish at $80.79 per barrel.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
saw 1,917,040 call contracts traded on Tuesday, compared to
1,110,929 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call
ratio arrived at 0.58, while the 21-day moving average held at
0.59.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $113.20 and resistance around $115.15. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $45.50 and resistance is around $46.65.
