NEWS LEADERS AND LAGGARDS-----------------------------------------
So far this morning, Allscripts-Misys Healthcare Solutions (MDRX),
Jarden Corporation (JAH), and New York & Company (NWY) lead the
list of companies with positive news, while Associated Banc-Corp
(ASBC) and Rockwell Automation (ROK) lead the list of companies
with negative news. Chevron (CVX), Public Storage (PSA) and Intel
(INTC) were upgraded this morning, while Walt Disney (DIS), Burger
King (BKC), and Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) received downgrades.
MARKET OVERVIEW---------------------------------------------------
Overseas trading is in fine shape this morning, as seven of the 10
foreign indexes that we track are in positive territory. In Asia,
most of the markets closed on a positive note, with Shanghai
equities boosted after China's cabinet approved market-reform
measures such as the launch of index futures and short selling.
Strong gains for gold and crude oil prices helped to lift the
region's miners and energy producers. Trading in Japan was closed
on Monday for a holiday. Turning to Europe, shares extended this
year's gains, with miners boosted by more signs of strength in the
Chinese economy.
The futures contract on the 30-year bond added 6/32 on Friday.
Treasury prices rallied on Friday, sending yields lower, as the
fixed income market reacted positively to news that the U.S.
economy lost 85,000 jobs in December instead of adding the 15,000
jobs economists were expecting. Gains were limited, however, as
traders prepared for next week's government auction of $74 billion
in notes and bonds and the sale of an additional $10 billion in
Treasury-inflation protected securities. The Treasury plans to
sell $40 billion in 3-year notes, $21 billion in 10-year notes,
and $13 billion in 30-year bonds.
PUT/CALL RATIO ---------------------------------------------------
Equity option activity on the Chicago Board Options Exchange
(CBOE) saw 1,830,988 call contracts traded on Friday, compared to
891,442 put contracts. The resultant single-session put/call
ratio arrived at 0.49, while the 21-day moving average dipped to
0.59.
SUPPORT & RESISTANCE LEVELS --------------------------------------
The S&P Depository Receipts (SPY) show support in the neighborhood
of $111.39 and resistance around $114.63. For the Nasdaq 100
(QQQQ), support is near $45.92 and resistance is around $46.55.
