SmartHistoryXL allows you to back test stock/option searches on historical options data and search settings from the past. From the search results, you can evaluate the returns that would have been possible if you traded those positions on that date and held until the present, expiration day, or any day in between.

The purpose of this tool is to help you develop search settings based on back-testing with the hope that those search settings used today will produce option positions that will perform in a similar fashion in the future. Past results are no guarantee of future results, but you certainly have more knowledge about your choice of settings if you know how they would have performed in the past. These tools will show you how your choices performed and compare them to the market in general. You can see the returns for each of the stocks screened, on all positions, or selected positions.

Using the SmartHistoryXL Tool...

1. When the tool first loads you must select:

Strategy: Pick one of the 20 option strategies we support.
Search Date: Choose the month and day you want the search performed.
Saved Search: Choose the saved search parameters you want applied.
Click "Submit These Settings"

2. The results are displayed as if the screen was actually performed on the date you selected. Also shown are the screening parameters used in the search that you back tested. These parameters can be changed to run new searches. Once you have a new search that back tests well, you can save the new search settings for use in present market conditions.

3. A "more info" button is displayed on the left of every selection which will allow you to:

Analyze Position - shows how a position performed from a search date to expiration or the present
Price History - shows the actual prices for the stock and options from the search date to expiration or the present.
Stock Chart - Big Charts to see the price history of the stock

4. To do a back testing group analysis of every stock selected click the "Calculate Group Results" button at the bottom of the stock list. This will produce a page, which shows each security on the date of the screen and its value today or at expiration which ever comes first.

5. The group analysis can be modified in several ways:

Certain selections can be omitted from the group analysis by clicking the check box next to the more info button and using the "Remove" button at the bottom of the page. This will allow you to remove anomalous results due to split or bad data.
The ending date can be modified for the group by selecting a custom end date from the drop down menu at the top of the stock list on the right. The default ending date is today.

6. A summary of returns is displayed at the bottom of the list and compares the results of the group to the Q's and the SPX over the same time period.

7. The more info button mentioned in #3 above is also available to see more detailed data on each selection.
